Dr. James A. Scriven, 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 13, 2017. He was born January 10, 1927 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of James A. and Loretta M. (Viola) Scriven. He courageously served his county in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for five years, receiving the Army Commanders Award for public service. He was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on 1945. He then went on to receive his Bachelor and Masters degree from Kansas State University and his Doctorate of Education at the University of Oklahoma in 1962. Dr. Scriven worked 40 years in education; nine years in public schools as a teacher, and 31 years in University Administration; the last 19 years at Youngstown State University, retiring in 1988. Dr. Scriven will always be remembered by his wife, the former, Kathryn E. Stump, whom he married November 29, 1980; sister, Laurine Atkinson of Abilene; brother, William (Linda) Scriven of Kansas; and two children, Dr. Karen Scriven and James D. Scriven; and grandchildren. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 18, at Holy Family Church in Poland. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Crestline, Ohio. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman.
