Obituary for Margaret P. Haushalter

Youngstown--Margaret Blum Haushalter died August 6, 2018 at the age of 76. She was the daughter of George W. and Ruth P. Blum (deceased), the older sister of Phyllis Blum Cole, and the wife of George David Haushalter (deceased), as well as the mother of David and Jeffrey Haushalter, sister-in-law of Robert Cole, and aunt of Sarah and Rachel Cole. Margaret was born in Rutledge, Pennsylvania but grew up in Ohio, graduating from Tallmadge High School and Wooster College. She was an early volunteer in the Peace Corps, carrying out public health work for two years in Malawi, Africa. Moving to Youngstown after her return, she gained a degree in nursing from YSU and began a career in pediatric intensive care at Tod Children’s Hospital. For many years she has been an active member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Youngstown and a singer in the Stambaugh Chorus. She enjoyed biking with her family and the Outspoken Wheelmen. Especially after her retirement Margaret became a committed volunteer in local organizations, ranging from Help Hotline and the MS Society to animal protection agencies like West Side Cats. She has always enjoyed traveling, discussing politics, and spending time with her animals. There will be a memorial service in her honor on Wednesday, August 15 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 1105 Elm Street in Youngstown. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the church, your local animal shelter, or WYSU. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman. Family and friends may visit the Book of Memories at www.rossifunerals.com to view this tribute and send condolences to Margaret’s family.
