Carolyn M.  McGivern
Carolyn M. McGivern, 80 years young, wife of Robert E. McGivern of Boardman, OH, passed away peacefully at home on February 15 2018, after a five-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Born on May 25, 1937 in North Braddock, PA, to William and Loretta Gross, she attended St. Williams Grade School in East Pittsburgh and St. Thomas High School in Braddock. Carolyn graduated from the Westinghouse Technical College, where she sharpened her secretarial skills of typing, shorthand, and keypunch allowing her to return to the workforce after her children were raised. She was happy in her work at Easter Seals Center, Youngstown Hospital Association, and Catholic Charites Regional Agency as an Administrative Assistant. She particularly enjoyed working on the “Men Who Cook” project. Carolyn was a faithful parishioner of St. Christine church serving on parish council and as an RCIA sponsor. Known for love and service to family and friends, she always helped in times of need, and greatly enjoyed caring for her many grandchildren. A generous host to visitors and eager to attend family activities, she enjoyed vacations near and far, visiting family and friends along the way. She was known by her treasured friends and neighbors for a kind and generous spirit. Carolyn married in 1958 and would have celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary this October 4th. Together with her devoted husband, she raised six beautiful children. She is survived by: husband Robert, children Monica (Don) Lovre, Wexford, PA; Donna Clark, Columbus, OH:, Eileen (Larry) Bertolini, Columbus, OH; Robert Jr. (Anne) McGivern, Huntersville, NC; Richard (Kelly) McGivern, Columbus, OH; Laura (Ron) Butte, Tucson, AZ. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: JR Lovre, Patrick (Kelsey) Clark, Dominic Bertolini, Kevin Clark, Carina Bertolini, Michael Clark, Annamarie Lovre, Nate McGivern, Hannah McGivern, Libby McGivern, Wesley Butte; and 1 great grandchild Charlotte Clark, who was blessed to have recently met her great grandma. Carolyn is survived by her eldest brother William “Bud” Gross, and was predeceased by her sister Eileen (Danny) Rossetti, Robert (Doris) Gross, and sister-in-law, Bernie Gross. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of the Valley for their compassionate care. Family and friends may call on Friday, Feb. 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman, and again on Saturday, Feb. 24 at St. Christine Church from 10a.m. until the time of Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11:00 AM at St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44511.The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in Carolyn’s name be made to either: Catholic Charities, Diocese of Youngstown, 144 West Wood Street, Youngstown, OH 44503 (ccdoy.org), or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611 (www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org)
