Obituary for Daniel P. Cipar

Reverend Daniel P. Cipar, 81

LIBERTY – Reverend Daniel P. Cipar, 81, died at Windsor House at Liberty Health Care, on Feb. 2, 2018. He was a retired priest of the Diocese of Youngstown.
Born in Reading, Pa. on Feb. 4, 1936, Father Cipar was the son of the late Sophie (Tinus) Cipar and John Cipar.
He graduated from SS Cyril & Methodius School in Reading prior to entering the Sacred Heart Mission Seminary in Geneva, Ill. He completed high school and one year of college before transferring to the former Sacred Heart Novitiate on Logan Way in Youngstown. He completed his studies for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Seminary in Shelby, making vows in 1958 as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart. Father Cipar was ordained May 27, 1961, by The Most Reverend George Rehring, D.D., in Toledo. His first solemn Mass was held June 4, 1961, at the church he grew up in, SS Cyril & Methodius Church, located at Sixth and Laurel Streets in Reading.
Following ordination, Father Cipar studied at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa; Loyola University, Chicago; Aurora College, Aurora, Ill.; and DePaul University, Chicago, earning a bachelor of arts and master of divinity degrees from the latter. He then served as parochial vicar at Holy Cross in Batavia, Ill. In 1980, he began two years of study at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., where he served as associate rector while earning a master’s degree in Liturgical Studies. He then served as pastor of Holy Family in Nazareth in Pennsylvania where he built a large addition to the parish school, instituted a parish council and was president of the local ecumenical ministerial association.
His favorite ministry was helping to form future Catholic leaders by challenging them both spiritually and intellectually and encouraging them to be passionately Catholic. To that end, he spent time in sabbatical studies at Boston College in Boston and then served as the chaplain at the Newman Center at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
In 1993, Father Cipar came to the Diocese of Youngstown as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart Religious Priest. He was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in East Palestine in 1993 where he remained until his retirement in 2010. While serving as pastor of our Lady of Lourdes Parish Father Cipar was incardinated into the Diocese of Youngstown as a diocesan priest in 2002. Father Cipar served as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council 1890 for many years, as a member of Priests’ Personnel Board, Priests’ Council and the Priests’ Retirement Board.
In 2011, he celebrated his Golden Jubilee at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in Reading surrounded by family and friends. His love, care and kindness spread throughout many wonderful families, friends and relatives because of his love for the Lord.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Joseph Cipar.
Father Cipar is survived by his sister-in-law, Dolores Cipar of Reading; his niece, Paula (Cipar) Barron and her husband William Barron also of Reading; a nephew, David Cipar of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two great-nieces, Lauren and Kristen Barron.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in East Palestine with viewing calling hours preceding Mass from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oblate Sisters Novitiate, 50 Warner Road, Hubbard Ohio 44425 or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio 44512.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.
