Obituary for Steven J. Ilko

Steven J.  Ilko
BOARDMAN – There will be a funeral service at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, for Steven J. Ilko, 62, who passed away Saturday, March 11, surrounded by family.
Steven was born on May 30, 1954, in Youngstown, the son of Andrew and Martha (Haluska) Ilko.
He attended Boardman High School and was a graduate of Youngstown State University with degrees in Accounting and Psychology.
In 1977, Steven worked as a photographer for the Niles Daily Times prior to his career at the Warren Tribune, where he was a photographer from 1979 to 1994. He also worked at the Youngstown Vindicator. In 1982, Steven was recognized as Ohio News Photographer of the Year. He transitioned careers to pursue another passion, helping others.
Steven worked as a Psychotherapist for 25 years, from 1990 to 2015. He was also an active volunteer for the American Red Cross from 2001 to 2015, joining first responders during multiple Florida Hurricanes, Hurricane Katrina, and 9/11 at the Pentagon and Ground Zero in New York City. He helped countless surviving families cope with the tragedies endured during these events.
Steven was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Ilko.
He is survived by his mother, Martha Ilko; his brother, Andrew (Joann) Ilko; his sisters, Martie (James) Tomaino, Monica (Allen) Meffan, and Mary Margaret Ilko; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4222 South Ave. in Youngstown on Wednesday, March 15, with a Panachida Service at 4:30 p.m.
There will be a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, at St. George Byzantine Catholic Church, 1762 Canfield Road in Youngstown, with the very Rev. Richard I. Lambert, celebrant.
Burial will take place at Lake Park Cemetery, 1459 E Midlothian Blvd. in Youngstown.
